To the editor: I was out at the Wakarusa wetlands a few weeks ago and noticed a group of coots swimming and feeding. By that I mean American coots — black, duck-like birds with white bills — not “old coots” — geezers who write cranky letters to the editor.

Members of the West family take a hike through the Baker University Wetland during the Jayhawk Audubon Society butterfly tagging event Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009. A colder and wetter summer resulted in fewer wetlands flowers and a lower migrating monarch population this year for partipants.

A response to those who keep claiming the wetlands is merely old farmland Baker University flooded.
The version of history that trafficway proponents constantly harp on is full of half truths and deliberate distortions largely constructed to justify decades of attempted cultural extermination and land theft. Haskell's sense of its past has no merit in this bigoted self-serving mega-narrative of determined wetland pavers.

Students from Langston Hughes Elementary spent some time in the Baker Wetlands learning about critters Monday. Other area schools will be visiting the wetlands later this month.
Local activists hoping to help save the Baker wetlands from South Lawrence Trafficway construction were on KU's campus Monday. They were asking for students and other concerned individuals to sign a petition.
The annual burning of portions of the Baker Wetlands took place most of the day Wednesday. Smoke from the controlled burn could be seen from many parts of Lawrence.
