The Shawnee Trail is the oldest of the major Texas Cattle Trails. It was in use from the 1840’s and lasted until 1872. It was first used as a migration route to Texas in the 1830’s and was known as the Texas Road.
When it became known as the Shawnee Trail is not known. (Try i4CQuest-Keywords: "David Dary" "Shawnee Trail")
It had three major branches and many feeder lines. The branches were the East Shawnee, the Middle Shawnee and the West Shawnee Trails. Baxter Springs, Kansas seems to be a hub of these trails.
Shawnee Trail or Preston Road or Texas Trail or Military Road or Emigrant Trail.

About Pawhuska
Pawhuska city has been the seat of Osage County since 1907. It was settled in 1872 and was named for an Osage chief.
Pawhuska means White Hair in the Osage language. The Indian Agency erected the first buildings in 1873. Cattle and oil were the main trades by 1897, and there was a cotton gin and some light manufacturing including oil field equipment and clothing.

Indian Territory actually existed under a formal Territorial Government for only a very brief time, but the phrase has also been used to describe many different regions down through the years as westward expansion changed the face of the Nation.
Historically, the older term "Indian Country" is actually a more useful description. I make no attempt here to track every encroachment and every land cession, only to depict general boundaries as they existed at different times. I believe this is enough to show how Tribes and Nations from such varied parts of the country ended up in what is now Oklahoma.
More specific migration paths can be found in exploring the appropriate First Nation Histories and the individual land cessions that are covered on most state pages.
