In a moving and madly viral video (2010) last year, composer Eric Whitacre led a virtual choir of singers from around the world. He talks through the creative challenges of making music powered by YouTube, and unveils the first 2 minutes of his new work, "Sleep," with a video choir of 2,052. ADDIT Together with Trello FBMG:

Peter, Bob, and M Ichael, Just posted EoST case study outline (in Trello!).

I had mentioned to Peter and Michael that I would like to incorporate their perspectives in the chapter. Since the three of you are working on the Trello project, I would like to include your perspectives. I will be talking about discovering Trello through your WiP sharing. So if you can give me some background on how you got involved in the Trello project, what each of you wanted through this project, and how you see it enhancing the value of EoST for you as well as what you can contribute to EoST that would be much appreciated. I am really running short of time so even a couple of paragraphs would be great - whatever you can write! Also, respond to any of the questions that interest you in the attached list. Thanks. Rama

M Ichael

Rama, Actually I am just an active observer on the Trello work. Peter is in the lead. Fascinating to watch but doesn't really work for me yet.

Dasaratha

That is fine too - you can write from that perspective ...

Or any other thoughts on EoST participation and how it has helped you using the questions above as a starting point so I can tgie it in to chapter easily...

Sharing WiP to stimulate conversations to improve your own work while enhancing others is something you can definitely speak to...

M Ichael

What is your time frame? How long should it be 2 or 3 paragraphs?

Dasaratha

2-3 paragraphs will be great!

Time frame: sooner the better...

You can tie in paying it forward as well...

M Ichael

within a week? or a couple of days?

Dasaratha

If possible, couple of days...

After 10 years, now it is moving under time pressure

M Ichael

stay tuned...

Dasaratha

Thanks!

Thankfully, Nelson did graphic design work fast - his proposal said 2-4 weeks - if he had done that, I would never have got this done...

M Ichael

deadlines focus the mind...

Dasaratha

Yes, they are indeed organizing when you know what you are doing...

M Ichael

I will be writing about how the conversation has lead to many breakthroughs for me in my own work....

Dasaratha

That will be great - exactly the kind of thing I am writing...

I think it could become a living document, a useful document for EoST members...

M Ichael

I will write something on D docs and send you and whoever a link...

Dasaratha

OK. You have my email so you can send there.

M Ichael

k I will probably send you the link via chat...

Dasaratha

That is fine too.

I am on Facebook all day anyhow

M Ichael

time for chores...more later.

Dasaratha

Bob, I know you know that the tetras are about quadratic relationships. 4 nodes.

Dasaratha

Thanks, M Ichael. That is a great template. Peter and Bob, if we all follow a somewhat similar structure, it will be much easier to integrate. M Ichael's story-telling style will fit very well with how PhD Project functions... Wish I had time to do more of this in other chapters...

M Ichael

Rama, Always keep in mind you have a tetra who want to help.

Yes, but Michael I'm retarded in ongoing unlearning process that led to 4-character mnemonics I refer to as AcroSpeak ... These evolved as memory aides for 5-7 minute Toastmasters Club Program CPE.

Dasaratha

Bob, Can you tell me more about persistent communication in terms of how that influences your participation in EoST?

Dasaratha

Conversations are one of the Six Cs, the system of success in my model. So if you had something very simple on persistent communication (e.g. why and how we can get to persistent communication) and how sharing work in progress is a means to persistent communication that will tie in well with chapter focus...

Dasaratha

Bob, I somehow missed what you wrote about Trello and blogging - if you can give me a few sentences on your thoughts on persistent conversations (that idea intrigues me like Michael's transmedia) that would be very helpful and I can tie it together. I am talking about brainwriting a lot, and tying into persistent communication ideas would be very helpful...

Bob, Peter used this hashtag, but it is how I have started engaging groups, it seemed like a concept worth developing. Seems too resonate with Michael too. Bob, what the team needs is a Glossary of acronyms, a simple alphabetic list of the acronyms you use ... If this is in Trello, invite me to the board, I will suggest a curatable reference for each piece, in Hashtag format, in asynchronous mode, and create a reference structure. We can then discuss the reference structure ... I will attempt to create the reference structure in tetrad format, to allow rapid comprehension and navigation. This will be a #ShareWIP style project, if you guys are willing to try it and see what happens ... Even just a Glossary of Bob's work would be a fantastic resource, with this embedded tetrad: Acronym, Meaning, Hashtag, URL The flip side of this exercise is to understand Bob's brilliance at learning these, and to create a team environment where all can speak that language to make rapid contributions ... But the glossary may help that process considerably ... A PDF can be printed for each card on most host operating systems these days, indeed for each board, so you can provide a Glossary PDF to each project participant expressing interest, Bob.

Despite espousng an open, sharing mentality, they still used old school twentieth century thinking about running the business side. So Ecademy as was folded, because they never got the full power of the network that they could have ... (Mostly they kept trying to monetise connections and advice, instead of allowing the network full creativity on what to do next, the gene pool on creativity and diversity was not wide enough ...) In the end, Facebook undercut Ecademy, because it was free to join, free to discuss, free to get advice, and we could all start making #Relationships ... This is Derek's irony ... he espouses Relationships, but is not too good at fostering them himself ... it's a worry given how Ecademy ended ...

Peter

Bob, Not sure how that academic paper relates to your Acronyms?

Peter

Bob, The Visual Thesaurus is a good first step towards #DecodeAcro, but having it all on one page in Trello, instead of the 7 on VT, allows a scroll to find results instead of a slower web access request ...

Peter

Bob, I'm also planning a #LightningProject among us that can result in a more accessible form of documentation for the wonderful library you have amassed ...

Back to #VT, also not stored in alphabetic sequence, so no #FindFast option ...

Great demonstration of adapting IMPLICIT Five-Rs Project Management ThinkLets protocol by using recursive Fail-Fast .. Tell -> Show -> DO -> Review Results -> Repeat process with feedback improvements

During 1964-65 transition to my second 21-year career, I was serving my University of Kansas CommUNITY of Practice (KU-CoP) as 1965 Jayhawker Magazine Yearbook Business Manager. So, I proposed changing our Fall Semester Registration-Subscription protocol from Opt-In to Opt-Out to increase front-end cash flow. act MindShihft unleashed co-creativity of both Editor & Art Director based upon my verbal contract with our advisor ...

Bob RJ

My social engineering verbal contract with originator of KU-1939 Magazine Yearbook innovation was based upon mutual respect, reputation risk impact assessment plus a framework of trust cultivated by my role as JMY-1964 Distribution (Logistics) Manager. Minimum requirements were to deliver a quality product on-time within a reasonable budget. Since that was already our virtual team's mission, I upped the bar to include recruiting and training our replacements and challenging them to DO a better job than our crew delivered!

Bob RJ

Our prototype ALL-WinWin Leadership Learning Collaboratory sustained itself until 1969-70 when a Journalism Senior was the JMY-1970 Editor. Author Richard Louv was that emerging student leader who had additional challenge of rescuing his crew's JMY Work In Proces from the riot-caused burning of Kansas Memorial Union during "civil unrest" in Lawrence, Kansas.

Today, Richard Louv is our Global Village guiding force of this MindShifting organization ...

Yes - Before I became an ASM International Board Regional Director, those of us who passed initial CISA-1982 Certification Exam used "Paper Chase" (Law School Studies) as our model. We co-hosted a Sat-AM (10 weeks) to coach, mentor & tutor next wave of CISA aspirants on each of the EDPAA Common Body of Knowledge (CBK) ten domains with mock questions. This "Pass Down the Line" CommUNITY Stewardship lifelong learning practice rapidly expanded our qualified pool of CISA & later CISSP (InfoSystems Security) professionals.

Bob RJ

Rama - Absolutely! My M-O-M-Matrix for fraud analysis / investigative support & CyberCrime Fighting Forums (2000-02) were relics of experiences with recycling USNavy sailing & steamship handling "lessons learned" via Sea Yarns. Where M1 = Motives / O2 =Opportunities / M3 = Methods / M4 = Meta-Ethics or Morality ... Then use Ends-Means Analysis to hypothesize HOW control systems were compromised based upon verifiable facts!

Bob RJ

Many of the pioneering Computer-Aided Audit Techniques (CAATs) were derived from Information Integrity Assurance (IIA) scripts I coded to discover anomalies in our FOCCPAC Sea Surveillance System Database 1970-71) ... I interviewed an experienced Senior Chief Quartermaster (SCQM) who was doing weekly half-day reviews of printed green bar ship locator reports for inconsistencies. A subject matter expert doing DETECT & CORRECT grunt work to sustain MIS-perception that a printed report converted Garbage-Input into GOSPEL-Output rather than standard interpretation of GIGO AcroSpeak ...

Bob RJ

So, we converted the SCQM's heuristics (rules of thumb) into exception reports run on the Naval Data Center mid-watch to enter corrections daily. We also did some type of reward/recognition for rated QM's who discovered residual exception patterns to update logic of our BIOneering NDC-CAATs.

Bob RJ

To ALERT our clients about insidious Peopleware that ignored GIGO nature of embedded remote sensing system inputs, we co-created a rubber stamp mirroring cigarette package warnings ... CAUTION: Use of information in this report may be hazardous to your career!

Bob RJ

Without going into details of of problem escalation antics, I was invited to brief Deputy CincPacFlt (RADM David C. Richardson) on results of our Failure-Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) field research efforts. He tasked CO, FOCCPAC to draft specifications for pending conversation to DoD-funded WWMCCS Ocean Surveillance System designed to use DARPA "Keyhole Satellites" & Geo-Positioning Sattellites (GPS) ...

Bob RJ

While waiting on disposition of my selection to Naval Post-Graduate School, I was tasked with training my NDC replacement on TIPS, Tricks & traps to AVOID while drafting WWMMCCS-OSS input integrity assurance specifications. Captain Joe Geary, USN agreed that these should be UNCLASSIFIED (FOUO) to ensure we could both include these "lessons learned" into our private graduate studies as working papers.

Bob RJ

I declined my USNPS selection & arranged a General Mills' Educational LOA to complete InfoSci (MS) graduate studies at UHManoa (Oahu County) Hawaii ... But, Deputy CincPacFlt & CO, FOCPAC colluded to launch an innovative knowledge management conservation program funded via Center for Naval Analysis (CNA). So, as a USNR-R (Ready Reservist), I joined NRSAND 14-2 during 1971 Fall Semester to help pre-stage WWMMCCS transition plans.

M Ichael

M Ichael

" how to THINK like a thief but without acting like one! "

Bob RJ

Same USNR-R tasking followed me when I joined NRSAND V-12 based at NAS Twin Cities co-located with Minnesota's MSP Airport. From 1973-78, annual two-week Active Duty for Training gigs were at Pearl Harbor's Ford Island. Timing usually co-incited with year-end holidays when Hawaii International Conference on Systems Sciences (HICSS) was happening. I also did UMN-MISRC (Management Information Systems Research Center) extension courses for continuing professional education plus monthly ASMTC Chapter Programs.

Bob RJ

As an EDP Auditor(UI), General Mills Chemicals (now Henkel Chemicals) retained me as a hybrid financial systems analyst to adapt NRSAND "lessons learned" into prototype high-integrity monthly report of operations (MRO) ... As part of GMCI's Corporate Social Responsibility Meta-Ethics, I got involved when the Minnesota EDPAA/ISACA Chapter was forming.

Dasaratha

Sounds like you have extensive experience in auditing and systems, I am more a systems person - engineer, information systems Ph.D., then moved into Accounting.

M Ichael

Dasartha A connection I think I see between Bob, you and me is that the best way (imo) is to focus on failure to see what is going on in a system. When the economy failed I learned more about the financial system in a couple of months than in 4 years in college. When I was a printer when the machine failed I learned how the parts are interconnected and affected each other. When I think about high school kids I focus on why kids drop out. The hard part is preventative maintenance to reduce system failures.

Bob RJ

Rama - There's nothing better than a Cross-Functional Team with folks having experienced non-academic performance problem solving projects with virtual A-Team stakeholders.

Dasaratha

Good point. A key discovery for me is that the systems fails children with varying abilities because of goals versus opportunity focus. Goals that the powers that be decide should be achieved, versus opportunity for learning that I believe is there for everyone...

Bob RJ

Michael & Rama - Agreed, sharing FMEAware pragmatic knowledge, skills & abilities is a vital part of my inter-generational knowledge transfer passions!

M Ichael

To get to peace, I learn as much as I can about war.

M Ichael

" goals versus opportunity focus. " Agreed. Teachers are measured by acheiving goals set be people who are not in the classroom. The new thing with the SAT exam is that it has be redesigned to try to measure "critical thinking" It still has to go through a couple of iterations to get it right. Consider what happens as parents understand that "critical thinking" is the way to get into a good college.

Dasaratha

Not sure anyone even knows what critical thinking is

Anymore than they know what systems thinking is...

So if you tell someone to practice critical thinking or systems thinking, they would not be very clear what you were asking them to do. In contrast, if you are learning say Bharathanatyam, you know exactly what that means and how to learn it.

There was an opportunity with DSRP but Derek does not seem to go in that mode of spelling out scope and sequence for how to go about learning and practicing.

M Ichael

Quite so. The SAT business depends on rigorous measures of critical thinking. The approach is slow reading. What is the context of the text? What is the argument that is being made. I think this is related to DSRP.

Bob RJ

Michael, That mission's easier from a "White Box" than "Black Box" perspective since it's much easier to elicit underutilized "lessons learned" and HOW virtual teams transformed their persistent Crisis Response Mindsets into Anticipatory (PREsponse) Systems Thinking by recurring FAIL-Fast completed examples ..

Dasaratha

Yes, far better to call it slow reading and what exactly that means than jump on the highly confusing critical thinking train...

M Ichael

David Coleman was the force behind Common Core. Now he is the CEO of the College Board. Bob, yes. My approach for project management and product develop is to fail with a minimum of risk. The feedback will help you understand why it failed. In project management I focus on what could go wrong. Build failure scenarios and do what you have to do to minimize the probability of failure.

M Ichael

"better to call it slow reading and what exactly that means than jump on the highly confusing critical thinking train..." Common Core and SAT call it close reading.

Dasaratha

close reading is much more precise

M Ichael

Yes. Assessment needs precision for useful improvement. Dasartha have you considered how to measure how far someone has gotten to making their own system of success. I figure with the precision a guide can intervene and help early enough to have an effect.

Bob RJ

Rather than "slow reading" I subscribe to FAIL-Fast Adaptive Outdoor Recreation with maximum exposure to lifelong learning that empowers mind-shifting from Corrective Intelligence into phased Co-creative / Collective / Connective Intelligences ... The high school Junior Achievement Co-Ed Program I advised in mid-1970s was finally adopted as benchmark for BSA's highly effective Venturing Program a decade ago. That's when I re-engaged as a BSA District Commissioner to advocate merging 9-Mile Creek Watershed GPSurveys with Leave No Trace (EarthSea-Keeping) Meta-Ethics ... The fourth leg of CyberCrime Fighting & Corrective Intelligence

M Ichael

Great approach. The SAT is focused on only one piece of the puzzle. Just like school in general.

Bob RJ

Richard Louv's Children & Nature Network now has a Natural Leaders "Pass Down The Line" of 20-30 year-olds with BSA Venturing Program graduates! These are the MILLENNIALS I'd hire in a heartbeat to help design & become highly effective project-based learning coaches, mentors & tutors who are NOT sequestered in a built (box-like) learning environment disconnected from natural history mysteries!

M Ichael

Dasaratha

M Ichael: Measuring systems of success - yes, I have some metrics in mind. I have not written down...

M Ichael

Dasartha, I wonder if an approach is to ask why people did not complete the PhD project.

M Ichael

Bob, I think the optimal intergeneration approach is with three generations.grandparents, parents, kids. If you add great grandparents it's awesome way to learn history. My great grandparents were born around 1890, mom 1920's, me 1946, son 1972, granddaiughter 1999. So that means living stories from 1920 till today. With a little imagination I can think about 1890 to 2070. Works much better than calendar dates.

Peter

Rama, Systems of Success ... agenda overlap in a network is often really important ... When our agendas overlapped, we have engaged and produced for the work you needed for the PhD Project for All ... We all need to get smarter about publishing our projects, but then about the granularity where we can make mutual progress ... Perhaps Conversation is what allows us to do that ... Did you get what you needed to write your report?

10/14/2016 12:26PM

Bob RJ

Peter - I understood helping Rama before ourselves was the prevailing meta-ethic to which we'd subscribed when expediting "Learning Trello" rapid application (Fail-Fast) prototyping process ... Did I ignore or misreecall something?

10/15/2016 12:38AM

Peter

Originally, my recollection is that you, Bob, suggested the Trello Project, which I happily acceded to ... and then Rama joined a little later ... maybe I was the one misunderstanding ... The idea is that something works for all of us ... if you recall I asked you what your objectives were ... My strong belief is that Trello is an excellent tool, and that people will benefit from using it, and that it is an excellent base from which to collaborate on further projects ... I don't think you know my personal circumstances about why I have to take that approach and can't go too much beyond that ... A further point to make is that network resource, by its nature, has to ebb and flow, people have to dip in and out of projects ... I don't have time that I can call my own in the same way that you and Michael seem to, it's my own local scarcity issue that sometimes gets on top of me ... And like you, yes I do have my own projects, so I'm looking for project overlap, and a blend of helping others where I can, and also yes, gratitude that where they can, that others might help on my projects. There is still a family need for me to support them, and I need to do something towards that, so I'm not a retired boomer, indeed have somewhat negligible prospects of getting to that point unless I win the lottery ...

10/15/2016 2:35AM

Peter

Bob, can you restate your own objectives here, I lost then among the multi agency media, and then I will extract them to somewhere safe so I can come back to them and be more supportive ...

10/15/2016 5:41AM

Dasaratha

Peter, That is correct. I joined recently. I agree Trello is a great tool. As I posted in Trello use cases Trello yesterday, framing it as a project management tools limits our view of possibilities: https://trello.com/b/mhI25PuK/addit-together-with-trello This sums it up: blend of helping others where I can, and also yes, gratitude that where they can, that others might help on my projects.

Peter, Areas of overlap that I am seeing: 1) sharing WiP as a simple rule for EoST engagement, 2) using Trello as a tool for streamlining sharing of WiP, and 3) helping individuals access diverse perspectives through streamlining how they share WiP.

10/15/2016 7:08AM

Peter

Rama, yes absolutely, so many more collaborations than project management ... But FYI, I view all your steps forward as micro projects ... People get carried away with the idea that projects have to cost millions, but they can be very small, make only small progress, and cost only our time ... The reason project frameworks got so unwieldy is that people didn't understand how to collaborate, and needed a process to follow ... Unfortunately the big consultancies then got hold of it, and it grew into something of a monster. Our job is to simplify it again so far more people can access it ...

Peter

Also, Rama, of you have any of your excellent questions for me on the above topics, I'm happy to chip in ...

Dasaratha

All: I've just specified a mini-project, well it's more a mini-task within a bigger project, and would love any contribution from you guys however small:

https://trello.com/c/jcFtklaX/6-eost-crew-scope-first-card

Bob, are you still in touch with Wes? AT&T would be useful sponsors for the work we are trying to do ... Do you consciously try to maintain contacts in your networks? If not, could you try to reconnect with them?

Peter, Just added to a list on your mini project.. What does she love to do with no extrinsic motivation? I would start from there than figure out where she apply what she does to what some employeer needs done. Also how much money does she want to earn to take the stress out? How many hours does she want to work?

Peter

She is not bothered for now about money, we have agreed this gives her more freedom to experiment and try things. Agreed on the comment about her passions, which largely centre around helping others, she enjoys doing that ... Work hours, she wants to do more, but also be able to manage how much she is doing, and not overdo things. She is starting from scratch, effectively, other than the time she spends in discussion with me ...

Folks, I have been negligent in completing the cycle on the Trello exercise, and Learning what we accomplished. (Where Learning is step 4 after the Design, Produce, Educate steps ...) From the Learn perspective, I feel Rama has been able to pick Trello up and use it in very dynamic and structured ways. It is now a tool she seems comfortable using, and is feeding back dynamically from that exercise into her own daily processes. Rama, your thoughts on this are welcome. And here is my perspective: Rama is in any case the kind of person who thrives on rapid adoption, loves structure, and has this very dynamic cycle where she can adopt tools, use them, grow her practices and comment publicly in very short order. With Bob, I see lots of structure, and lots of dynamism, but perhaps less adoption of Trello for his own projects. Or at least publicly so, maybe you made the choice to use Trello but on other projects this group is not privy to. Interesting to know if this is actually true from your perspective, Bob. Finally with Michael, I definitely sense dynamism, but a different approach than my kind of structure. It makes more sense to me that Michael would not adopt Trello as a working tool, but I can't be too specific why that would be. Your feedback here, guys, on what you liked, what you didn't and why, is essential to the Learning exercise, and I have been remiss not asking for it before. Also, what could have been done better, from your perspective? What should be added to make Trello viable for you? Please be constructively critical, since I'd like to offer this "product" to the wider EoST community. So, Bob, we've had the Form & Storm: this part right here is the Norm, and it would be good to get to Perform.

Bob, I wondered why you brought up back up repeatedly. Peter, You have mentioned rapid prototyping as something I do and it is true. I moved forward through rapid prototyping. This to me involves "splumping" as Derek puts it - splitting and lumping things together. And Trello lets me do it simply and flexibly. I have even replaced blog on my main page by Trello Board. If I add a blog it will be accessible from there. In terms of what Bob raises about whether a software makes it or not, I am ok with it. If something happens, it will waste a little time but not much. For me a lot of time goes in rapid prototyping so something that supports that is good. My final versions will be in Word, Powerpoint etc.  Trello is more of an indexing/browsing mechanism...

M Ichael

It will help me alot if someone could give a clear vision for the Trello project. That will allow me to figure out how to fit in what I am doing with my work - trying to get to a visible language that will change the way people see "wicked problems" What value are we creating for whom? What is the optimal user experience?

M Ichael

I was doing some reading about thinklets as a design pattern language... "Modifiers: Increasing Richness and Nuance of Design Pattern Languages " is one piece. It would be interesting to try to figure out visuals that map to it.

The thing is I can go in so many directions it helps to know what would be interesting to other people. Bob, my approach to all the great stuff you bring up is a simple mantra, that I gives a protocol for many of the things you bring up.

The mantra is Define the intent. Notice the changes. Engage with the flow, Mull the interactions. Exchange as appropriate. Re define the intent. NEME is an acronym for Notice.Engage.Mull. Exchange.

Intent is about what might happen in the future. That's where Future Studies is important.

Bob RJ

Effective Virtual Team ROLE-playing (Requestor / Doer / Reviewer) entails accepting stakeholder with compatible A-TEAM (5As) attributes: A-1: ATTITUDE (Proactive / Positive / Problem-Solver) A-2: APTITUDE (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Competency) A-3: ABILITY (Applying above to IMPACT outcomes) A-4: AGILITY (Adaptability to adjust to changing needs) A-5: ACCOUNTABILITY (Responsible for measurable results)

M Ichael

This is how I would describe myself on that measure... A-1: ATTITUDE (Proactive / Positive / Problem-Solver) Yep. A-2: APTITUDE (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Competency) My knowledge is in the realm of change in social change in societies. In general history, especially of the USA. A-3: ABILITY (Applying above to IMPACT outcomes) I'm not yet clear on the outcomes we all want to get to. One possible outcome for me would be a peer review quality paper or series of papers written by non academics. A-4: AGILITY (Adaptability to adjust to changing needs) I need a clearer common definition of our changing needs, which goes back to a crystal clear statement of our intent. A-5: ACCOUNTABILITY (Responsible for measurable results) The measures go back to our Intent. What needs to be measured is progress to a goal. Are we on the right path or going down a blind alley.

M Ichael

A measure towards my goal is the engagement of Nora from the Bateson Institute, after reading her paper, I know we are on the same track. It is relatively easy for me - in my mind - to create visuals to illustrate her ideas. Doing it with fingers will take some time. Thoughts?

Bob, you have to give me words to understand why the map is germane to our collective journey.

Peter

Bob, you talk of expected outcomes, but do we have those here? When we engage, as we have, we can't be so that sure of the outcome. We may learn something, and I think that is down to the individual choosing their path to recognise learning along the way, and to make micro steering decisions, about what to do at each step. You and Michael have quite different approaches, and you are both comfortable with those approaches. It's a lot to ask people to really steep outside their comfort zone when that is almost like speaking a foreign language. My original question related to your statement that you tracked people's learning curves, and that was interesting to me. Your response, though, suggests that this tracking is in fact undocumented ... am I right?

The key to a virtual self organizing team is that everyone can do what is easy for them to do.Combine the various proclivities and talents and you have something much greater than each of us working in isolation. The way to get politics or whatever to evidence based decisions is to frame problem solution as "If I did this, the probability of Y is high, medium or low." What if media outlets and journos in general "study of postulating possible, probable, and preferable futures and the worldviews and myths that underlie them." We can build on the work Bob has done with future studies and perhaps make a small difference. In any case future studies will help change makers in any field, whether it is start ups, changing policy makers, or whatever. Our unique advantage is the diversity of views. We just have to settle on the right topics. I am open to any topic. It will give me a sounding board on developing a visual pattern language for change making.

M Ichael

To all, I ask what is the topic that is most important to you?

M Ichael

In just saw this from the Financial Times which supports my notion is the low hanging fruit is journalism. Every journalism school will have to respond to this new reality... And we journalists now know that what we do is useless. Our old-fashioned gathering of “facts” and ladling on of analysis prompted almost every newspaper in the US, even traditional Republican ones, to endorse Hillary Clinton. The new wave of fact-checkers — thank heaven for unpaid interns — unmasked Trump as a serial liar. It would be kind to say none of this made a blind bit of difference. In fact, it’s worse than that: for many people, everything we said was discredited by the fact that we said it. If the “mainstream media” argued that 2 + 2 = 4, populists would become convinced that it must make five instead. They say we lie. We don’t — or not consciously, anyway. But we did spend decades writing a reality that left out their point of view, and to them that felt like much the same thing.

nemetic modeling is closely aligned with visual learning. The task I set for myself is to work on a visual pattern language for complexity. "Cognitive apprenticeship is a theory of the process where a master of a skill teaches that skill to an apprentice." is the way I see it. Apprenticeship has to be augmented with explicit and rigorous learning to realize it's full potential.

Bob RJ

So, how's it going with your apprentice granddaughter?

11/20/2016 1:56AM

Peter

Michael, I have to say innovation and troubleshooting. The latter because I live helping people solve problems. Too much in a way, because I'm happiest doing the job, and not setting up a commercial way to do so, although I'm heading towards that with the Wix project. And innovation, because it is a key part of the creative process that people need when tackling their own troubleshooting needs. People often don't realise there is an underlying process with either of those activities, means replication of result, progress, is far more likely as a consequence.

Peter

Michael, discussing the difference between populists and those who are expressive in writing may be an aspect of why populists reject it. Both Brexit and Trump, my view, are a rejection of establishment. I think education is a symptom of the situation, not the cause, but that education could be the answer, because leveling the playing field, reducing inequality, making the powerful accountable, giving more folk more hope for the future will help reduce the levels of frustration and disturbance. Something Bob says about cycles, we need to tackle easy aspects in the cycle to start to break this one, and tackling education may be the best option, but it is certainly the hardest. Can we build a cycle of dissatisfaction, show how it is building at the moment? Maybe a pipe cleaner exercise, and show other historic moments of dissent? I bet the French Revolution might make an interesting comparison ...

Peter

But we need labels explaining the colours ...

Also the nodes seem to me to be events, driven by the colours feeding into them ...

These would also need labels. Be good to see the period of enlightenment, for example, where science was getting better press, compared with today where it's influence in populism is waning ...

"Can we build a cycle of dissatisfaction, show how it is building at the moment?" Peter Turchin is one of the sources I depend on. He has a good story about social instability..

elite overproduction

declining fiscal health of the state

He says and i agree a critical factor is the overproduction of elites.

"Turchin argues that the key to the formation of an empire is a society’s capacity for collective action. He demonstrates that high levels of cooperation are found where people have to band together to fight off a common enemy, and that this kind of cooperation led to the formation of the Roman and Russian empires, and the United States. But as empires grow, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, conflict replaces cooperation, and dissolution inevitably follows. Eloquently argued and rich with historical examples, War and Peace and War offers a bold new theory about the course of world history.

Thr-2:39am Peter's Posting on Alt-Channel So Bob, let's say this is a Storming moment for this instance of public impact from "authority action". We need to say when we have enough raw material, and I strongly suggest against taking a 100% attitude, instead being guided by Pareto, 20% effort for 80% result. At that point, covering Awareness and Discover in the ADDITT cycle, a decision can be made about the Direction we could take. Or deciding on the Forming we want. In the ADDITT process, the Integration is the hard work, the Produce element, where we decide who does what, where any output will go, how we will educate our audiences about what we did. Of course post production, we need to review what we did, and perhaps do some Norming. And then we can design what we do as a result. Is there any Performing? As a yes or no, Bob, is that your feeling on this, as a collaborative, co design, co production, co publish and co learning exercise?

The general approach is to look for the long, medium and short cycles in each sector. When the cycles peak close to each other, social instability radically increases. That is what is happening around the world today. It happened about 50 years ago in the 1960's. Global instability requires global explanations.

"It's not my job to predict the future. Indeed, I don't think that anybody can accurately and consistently predict the future. Instead, it's my job to help people plan intelligently for the future. I do this by trying to anticipate what might happen, what early warning signs to look for, and then help people create contingency plans to deal with these possibilities."

M Ichael

"n the context of using poststructuralism as a research method, this article introduces a new futures research method - causal layered analysis (CLA). Causal layered analysis is concerned less with predicting a particular future and more with opening up the present and past to create alternative futures. It focuses less on the horizontal spatiality of futures - in contrast to techniques such as emerging issues analysis, scenarios and backcasting - and more on the vertical dimension of futures studies, of layers of analysis

Peter

After pausing for breath, thought, Christmas and my wife's birthday, I realise we owe Bob a huge debt of gratitude for the additional work he has put in to the Learning Trello platform:

https://trello.com/c/i2SQz8Y7/179-application-value-benefits

And as always, I want to get some value for work done, to not waste that effort.

Can our small team look at this extra card I've put up, and consider what we can do with the material we have carefully curated. Who might find value in that, and where would they perceive the value, what specifically would it give them?

I will happily later write an overarching narrative about what we did, why, and what we found, as I think there are some key findings that others might be interested in, and this is noted at high level in that new task list. Other appreciations welcome, of course.

Many thanks for efforts so far, it would be good to decide whether or if to go further.

Peter, I am not sure about the group but just today morning we decided to go with Trello as our main organizer for this year. We were exploring Metamaps and Trello as the alternatives. Finally, settled on Trello because of its task orientation. Trello - capture concepts assocuiated with tasks within task versus making ideas the main thing as in Metamaps.

Dasaratha

Above is an example. Looks like checklists will be very useful for us.

Trello being bought is somewhat of a concern. Hope they continue to evolve the product the way it, it is such a simple and clean design.

Dasaratha

On another note, Yves and I have been talking a lot about practice. Breaking things down and really practicing. So that is the way we will be approaching Trello as well. Practice its use to manage our work daily, and figure out and use features as we go. This would be a suggestion for any Trello that you want to publish. May be not have too much of thought process etc. but clear explanations on features, which features to use and when, and how to practice.

Dasaratha

As you can see, we are marking by ADDIT componenets
