Reference in the text to the California road west of Lawrence as a "thronged thoroughfare of wagons, human beings, and stock" from June 1, 1854, to December 15, [3] indicates he had been in the territory for at least six months. In the summer he passed along the Kaw, noting its shallow channel without a canoe upon it.

Jonathan Earle on perpetuating manifest destiny mindsets via myths ...
p. 32: Simply put, it was his time in Kansas Territory that made a dedicated but little known abolitionist into the complex, mythic, and immortal figure whose "truth is marching on."
Brown's decision to abandon the usual abolitionist tactics of petition, lectures, and moral suasion in favor of intimidation, terror and guerrilla warfare ensured that slavery's end would not come without significant bloodshed.
He used the lawlessness and remoteness of the Kansas (Kanza) Territory to put his new violent plans into place and build a reputation as a new kind of anti-slaery warrior. It is a complicated legacy with which Kansans continue to struggle.
