On January 6th, 1941, as President Franklin D. Roosevelt closed his State of the Union Address to Congress, he described his vision for a better way of life through what he considered the four essential human freedoms: Freedom to Worship, Freedom from Fear, Freedom from Want and Freedom of Speech.

Historian Gene Smith's enlightening study not only chronicles important events in Jones's life but also explores how they helped shape the character and backbone of the navy during its formative years. He describes Jones's early career fighting smugglers, pirates, slave traders, and the British, evaluates his actions in the Battle of New Orleans, explains how he carried the stars and stripes to Hawaii in the 1820s, and how he helped incorporate California into the United States.
-
The embodiment of the nationalistic spirit that gripped the United States following the War of 1812, Jones was determined that his country would never again be subservient to the British, and as this biography clearly indicates, his actions and those of the nation's were influenced by that determination for the next forty years.

And this blogpost points out, correctly I think, that the US ever since manifest destiny took hold and we conquered from sea to shining sea, has been an Empire. As the article points out, no one in the US really wants to admit this, but it’s true—at the very least, discounting the system of worldwide military bases and client states America has built up in the last century, the US is a great example of a land empire.

Miltary Innovation in the Interwar Period (ISBN 0521637600)
1996: Cambridge University Press
Editors: Williamson Murray & Allan R. Millett
This study of major military innovations
in the 1920s and 1930s explores differences in innovating exploitation by the six major military powers.
