   Historians have written on "Bleeding Kansas" and on the frontier army as a constabulary force,

   but little scholarship exists on how the army performed its peacekeeping operations in the 1850s.

   In Peacekeeping on the Plains, Tony R. Mullis is one of the first scholars to detail the military concerns 
   associated with peace enforcement in Kansas and the trans-Missouri West. 
   
   Between 1854 and 1856, the Franklin Pierce administration called upon the United States Army to conduct a series 
   of peace operations in the newly formed Kansas and Nebraska territories. The army responded to the president's 
   call by successfully completing a mission against the Lakota Sioux in 1855 and by aiding civil authorities 
   in the imposition of peace among competing factions in Kansas during 1856. 
   
   Although these constabulary or police duties were not always popular with the soldiers that conducted them, 
   the purpose behind them remained constant - the maintenance of peace, order, and security. Given Americans' 
   misgivings about a standing army and their limited expectations of it as a domestic peacekeeper, 
   its use in this fashion during the 1850s was a delicate proposition.

Building and Aligning Strategy with Online Collaborative Tools

Too often, organizations struggle to implement strategies that are flawed, do not have buy-in from key stakeholders, or are outdated by the time they are finally released. Performance improvement professionals can take the lead in helping to build better strategies in the first place, using many new Web 2.0 collaborative tools such as group decision support systems, blogs, wikis, and web conferencing. This interactive session will allow participants to review and experience some of these tools, and to decide which applications might work for their own situations. Participants are asked to bring their laptops with wireless Internet capability, if possible.

Participants will be able to:

• Discuss why typical strategy development and alignment is flawed.
• Identify and use collaborative software and Web 2.0 tools to build strategy.
• Decide which software tools are best for various strategy formation and implementation situations.

An important piece of history:

Most people have seen still photos of the event but have never seen a newsreel film of the actual ceremony of the Japanese signing the surrender documents ending the second world war.  General Douglas MacArthur was the supreme commander of our armed forces in charge of the signing ceremony. The film is about 8½ minutes long, but worth watching and noting all the different representatives of the nations that fought in the war along with the USA.

 

 

Hawaii's Governor John Burns greeted the Apollo 11 astronauts, housed within the Mobile Quarantine Facility, at left, during ceremonies at Pearl Harbor. The trailer was off-loaded from the USS Hornet (CVS-12), prime recovery ship, at rear, and trucked to nearby Hickam AFB for the flight to the Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Texas. There, astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr., entered the Lunar Receiving Lavoratory to spend the remainder of their quarantine undergoing physical examinations and mission debriefings. Scientists working within the Lunar Receiving Laboratory analyzed rock samples returned from the historic lunar landing mission. NASA photo released July 26, 1969
