What is Scenario-Based Learning?

Intro SlideshowScenario-based learning is problem-based learning. SBL scenarios consist of tasks, requirements, resources, and reflection questions in an online intranet site for a virtual company. It can be part of a course or the entire course can be SBL. See Scenarios for a list of our scenarios-based tasks. Instructor guides, support material, and principled assessments items are available in Faculty Resources and our online community of practice (Scenario-Based Learning Group) in Tapped In.

Hip Deep in the Wakie

A digital watershed digest

Wakie History

(Abbreviated) History of the Watershed

Surging glacial meltwater breached the banks of the Kansas River and rushed downward across the land, forming what we now call the Wakarusa River Valley. (1) As the meltwaters slowed, fragments from the north part of our continent settled out, blanketed by a layer of fine silt. This unusual “backswamp” phenomenon contributed to the watershed’s diverse soil composition and subsequent ecological mosaic.(2)

Archeological evidence suggests human-land interactions extending back 10,000 years. The Valley’s wide variety of flora and fauna sustained numerous small Native American villages connected by foot trails and the network of streams. (3)

In Pursuit of Quantrill: An Enlisted Man's Response ...

Hervey Johnson, the author of the letters that follow, was born on June 13, 1839, at Leesburg, Highland county, Ohio. His great grandfather, "Governor" James Johnson, migrated from Botetourt county, Virginia, to Southwestern Ohio in 1812, where he devoted himself primarily to land speculation and town promotion.

His progeny, however, including Hervey's father Gerrard, apparently were less footloose,

and thus content to settle down as farmers and practitioners of their Quaker faith. 11

We got on the ferry boat and went over. We stopped and got something to eat,

and fed our horses at DeSoto, a small town on the southern bank of the Kansas.

www.kancoll.org/khq/1973/73_3_unrau.htm

The City of De Soto was laid out in the spring of 1857

and was named for the Spanish explorer, Hernando deSoto.

In 1858, John Possum, a Shawnee Indian, and Hattie Possum sold 80 acres to John F. Legate, S. Todd and Stratton and Williams for $1,200. The next sale was 80 acres to the De Soto Town Co. in July of 1861 for $1,176. The land, part of the Louisiana Purchase, cost the U.S. 3 cents per acre. It was given to John Possum who sold the first tract at $15 per acre.

Originally, Shawnee Street was the “main street” of town because it ran down to the river and ferry crossing. In addition, Major James B. Abbott is remembered as one of the town’s pioneer landowners and the builder of Abbot Hall, located at 83rd Street and Peoria. Today, Abbot Hall is the town museum.

With the construction of the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant De Soto boomed in the early 1940’s with people coming from all over the United States to work at the plant.

Tectology is a term coined by Alexander Bogdanov scientist, philosopher, economist, physician, novelist, poet, and Marxist revolutionary, for a discipline that consisted of unifying all social, biological and physical sciences, by considering them as systems of relationships, and by seeking the organizational principles that underly all systems.

His work Tektology:

Universal Organization Science, finished by the early 1920s, anticipated many of the ideas that were popularized later by Norbert Wiener in Cybernetics and Ludwig von Bertalanffy in the General Systems Theory.

Applications

Systems thinking is increasingly being used to tackle a wide variety of subjects in fields such as computing, engineering, epidemiology, information science, health, manufacture, management, and the environment.

For example:

Organisation Design and Development

Job Design

Team Population and Work Unit Design

Linear and Complex Process Design

Supply Chain Design

Business continuity planning with FMEA protocol

Critical Infrastructure Protection via FBI Infragard

Delphi method — developed by RAND for USAF

Futures studies — Thought leadership mentoring

Oceanography — forecasting complex systems behavior

  • NOAA's strategic vision is "an informed society that uses a comprehensive understanding of the role of the oceans, coasts, and atmosphere in the global ecosystem to make the best social and economic decisions."
  • The agency's mission is "to understand and predict changes in the Earth's environment and conserve and manage coastal and marine resources to meet our nation's economic, social, and environmental needs."
