Haskell students set out to save the Wakarusa Wetlands

By Alli Pruett on May 6, 2012 :: 6 News - Lawrence Haskell students set out to save the Wakarusa Wetlands.mp4

Lawrence- Students from Haskell Indian Nations University are setting out on a journey. They’ll embark on what they call the “trail of broken promises.” Those participating will walk from Lawrence to Washington D.C. in an effort to save the Wakarusa Wetlands.

They’ll carry a piece of legislation that calls for the protection of sacred places. There is currently no law in the United States that protects sacred sites on public land. Students and staff members from the university say as native people, they have no representation in Congress and this is their way of making their voice heard.

In order to be successful, leaders say they need strength and energy. They harvested a 2,000 lb. buffalo, saying that the animal gives off the energy they’ll need to complete the trip. Tribal members say those walking are giving of themselves and spreading awareness each step of the way. They say they’re prayers and sacrifices will help them accomplish what they set out to do.
