New Texas Maritime Academy Training Ship to Arrive Monday

On Monday, October 19, 2009 the Texas Maritime Academy (TMA) and Texas A&M University at Galveston (TAMUG) will welcome their newest training vessel. TMA, through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) has acquired the S.S. Cape Gibson to serve as the academy’s fourth training ship.

The S.S. Cape Gibson will be used as a training facility for more than 300 members of the TMA Corps of Cadets. Docked at the Mitchell Campus on Pelican Island, she will provide a learning platform for future licensed engine and deck officers. In the future, she will serve as a floating classroom for the academy’s summer cruises.

License-option cadets will gain sea hours for their time spent aboard the training ship during those cruises, which helps to satisfy qualifications for them obtaining Merchant Marine Third Assistant Engineer or Third Mate’s licenses.

Naval Reserve CART Detachment

By Journalist 1st Class Jeremy Allen, Naval Air Reserve Brunswick Public Affairs

BRUNSWICK, Maine (NNS) -- Family and friends recently waited anxiously at the Naval Air Station Brunswick picnic grounds for Naval Reserve Cargo Afloat Rig Team (CART) D201. Twenty-two Reservists from the unit were being demobilized after serving 60 days along with CART A401 from Syracuse, N.Y.

Together, the units, called CART Team 2, embarked aboard the Ready Reserve Force (RRF) ship USS Cape Gibson (T-AK 5051), which was sent to the Arabian Gulf for Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).

“Cape Gibson is an ammunition ship configured to replenish support and combatant vessels with ammunition underway,” said Lt. Cmdr. Mark Haigis, commanding officer of CART D201 and executive officer of the mobilized team. “We performed mostly vertical replenishment with large-deck amphibious ships and USS Constellation (CV 64), re-supplying them all with ammunition once combat operations commenced.”

Cape Gibson is one of Military Sealift Command’s (MSC) six modular cargo delivery system ships, and one of the 68 RRF ships in the sealift program office. These Reservists were trained at the MSC Underway Replenishment Training Center at Naval Weapons Station Earle, N.J., for various duties, including operating the 46-foot tower placed on the ship's main deck. The tower allows them to run a special cable to service their customer ship.

With either the cable or a helicopter, Cape Gibson supplied the fleet with ammunition of every kind.
