Be smart!

Always wear a proper fitting helmet in good condition. Parents should set a positive example by wearing their helmets. Watch for details on the annual bike rodeo\helmet giveaway for elementary school students in May sponsored by the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical Department, City of Lawrence, Douglas County Safe Kids Coalition, Laird Noller Automotive and the generous support of many local businesses and volunteers.

  1. Front head lamp with white light visible from 500' to be used after dusk.
  2. Rear red reflector visible from 100' to 600'. In addition a red light which is visible from 500', may be used.
  3. Reflectorized pedals which are visible front and rear for 200'.
  4. A brake that will make braked wheel skid on dry, level, clean pavement.
  5. Bikes may not be ridden on any sidewalk within a business district.
  6. Ride no more than two abreast.
  7. Use paths adjacent to roadways when provided and not use the roadway.
  8. Don't park in the path of pedestrians or vehicles on streets, alleys, or sidewalks.
Bicycles must not hinder or restrict access to handrails or ramps.
  9. Bikes should be parked in bike racks or at parking meter adapters.
Bikes should not be attached to a tree, fire hydrant, traffic control device or sign, street light, utility pole or any parking meter.
  10. Owners may register their bicycles at the police department. Registration of bicycles helps police in locating the rightful owners of lost or stolen bicycles. There is a small fee for registration.
