While some of the profits of each of the fireworks tents in town goes to good a cause, the VFW tent is the only tent locally owned and operated. That means that at the other tents the BIG fireworks company is taking about 80 Cents of every dollar of profit that is made right out of the City. Community Service Provided by VFW Post 6654 and its Auxiliaries ~All Services are Proudly Provided Completely Free of Charge~
• Perform Honor Guards Services for any deceased Veteran. • Place Flags on Veterans’ graves near Memorial Day. • Provide and Maintain Bronze Grave Markers – De Soto and Monticello • Provide Color Guards for Community Events: Memorial Day, Veterans Day, De Soto Days parade, and the LTMS Patriotic Assembly. • Provides Scholarships for DHS students and alumni (number of scholarships based on funds raised each year; 2009-2010 at $3,800.00) • Conducts Memorial Day Service to Honor the fallen. • Chartering Organization for Boy Scouts of America De Soto Troop 54. • Donation of meeting space for local Scouting Groups. • Donation of the Post Facility for use during all elections.
• Award savings bonds to De Soto students (6th grade thru 12th) for participating in a patriotic essay contest - $500 per year. • Sponsor and provide Kaw Valley Sportsman Association meeting space. • Provide Support to the Ladies Auxiliary and the Men’s Auxiliary of Post 6654. These are Organizations that conduct their own fundraising and provide community service, such as visiting the VA hospitals (Ladies) and providing Poinsettia flowers to widows of veterans at Christmas. (Men’s) • Provides long distance calling cards for troops deployed overseas. ($500 per year based on funds) • Provides hospital equipment for individuals who are in need. • Place an Avenue of Flags in the community - Provide and set up U.S. flags throughout the community on Holidays • Nominate and recognize Community members (Teacher, EMT, Policeman, & Fireman) each year to receive an award through the VFW.
• Provide financial assistance to veterans in need. Individual situations are presented to the post and donations are made based on that need. • Speaker events where decorated service veterans give presentations • Volunteers Halloween party for school age children (free for the kids, Treats, food, and activities donated by the post) • Provide first year’s VFW membership to deployed troops.
